Choose Sense Five Wood Coatings For Your Kitchen Refinishing

Transform Your Kitchen with Sense Five Wood Coatings Level 5 Refinishing Service

At Sense Five Wood Coatings, we're proud to have been recognized for our exceptional kitchen refinishing services and processes.

The 5 Step Cabinet Refinishing Process

This 5 step process ensures that you receive the same great service every time. It also ensures that if you do decide to go with another company that you know what to look for which is very important as repairs can be costly if not performed properly.

1-2 weeks

  1. We remove cabinet faces, labeling each cabinet face as we go before delivering them back to our shop to be completed offsite.
  2. We protect your home by creating an air tight barrier around the work area, masking your floors, countertops and appliances. Filtering air coming into the working area and ventilating this air outside if possible.
  3. We use an industrial de greaser to remove any built up grime from your cabinets.
  4. We then apply 2 coats of high quality lacquer primer which provides incredible smoothness and adhesion. Followed by 2 coats of high quality lacquer topcoat.
  5. We then deliver and reinstall your cabinet doors then cleanup. Ensuring everything is up to our standards.

General FAQ

The main components include:

  • Labor: Skilled work for sanding, cleaning, priming, and painting.
  • Materials: High-quality primers, paints, sealants, and other necessary products.
  • Preparation & Repairs: Costs for surface preparation and any needed repairs.
  • Hardware Updates (Optional): Expenses for replacing or updating handles, hinges, etc.
  • Contingency: A buffer for any unexpected issues during the process.

For a typical kitchen, costs generally range from $3,000 to $9,000 or more, depending on the size, condition of the cabinets, and the quality of materials used. You can read more on our processes and products used below.

Yes, labor usually makes up the majority of the cost due to the detailed and skilled work involved. You can read more on our processes and products used below.

Yes, if you decide to update cabinet hardware or make other aesthetic changes, those costs should be factored into your overall budget. Hardware to consider: Door hinges, handles or pulls, soft close drawer hardware, spice racks.

While our quote might initially seem close to the cost of new cabinets, here are several reasons why our service offers superior value:

  • Specialized Labor and Expertise: Our team uses advanced techniques for refinishing, repairing, or customizing your cabinets, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship. In contrast, new cabinet installation involves both high material and labor costs.
  • Preservation of Quality: Your existing cabinets may have unique, high-quality features that would be lost with a complete replacement. We enhance what you already have, maintaining the integrity of your cabinets.
  • Efficiency and Minimal Disruption: Replacing cabinets typically requires removing the old ones, incurring disposal fees, and causing more disruption in your home. Our service minimizes these issues.
  • Overall Cost Savings: New cabinets include additional expenses such as manufacturing, installation, and sometimes remodeling to fit the new setup. Our approach avoids these extra costs.
  • Quality Concerns with Lower-Priced New Cabinets: Often, new cabinets in the lower price bracket are made of melamine or have a wrap that can peel over time. While initially less expensive, they might not offer the durability or long-term satisfaction that our refurbishing service provides.

This approach ensures you receive a high-quality, cost-effective solution without the extensive expenses and potential issues associated with a full cabinet replacement.

What are the benefits of water-based lacquers?
Our premium water-based lacquers offer exceptional versatility—they can be applied over nearly any existing coating without triggering reactions or hidden failures that might only surface after the project is complete. This ensures a consistently smooth, refined finish across various surfaces.

What is the expected lifespan of the finish?
Assuming proper care and regular maintenance, the finish should remain flawless for 10 years or longer. However, because our cabinet doors are crafted from solid wood, natural movement along the seams can occur over time. This may appear as a faint, straight line, which is a normal characteristic stemming from the wood’s inherent structure.

What does the warranty cover?
The Sense Five craftsmanship warranty is designed to protect you against failures directly related to our workmanship. Please note that it does not cover issues caused by natural wood movement or a lack of proper maintenance.

Although our products are low VOC, we recognize that airborne particles generated during application can pose health risks. To mitigate this, we use a state-of-the-art HEPA filtration system that captures these particles before venting the filtered air to the exterior, ensuring a safe environment for everyone. It is highly recommended that nobody is in the home during the application process.

Removal & Cleaning

At Sense Five, our process begins with the careful removal of cabinet doors and drawer fronts, followed by a thorough de-greasing of the entire kitchen and the extraction of window panes from their casings.

Masking & Protection

We meticulously mask every surface—including areas not slated for finishing—to create a contamination-free environment. During this phase, incoming air is precisely filtered and extracted through a HEPA system, ensuring pristine conditions throughout the project.

Preparation & Application

Next, we gently scuff-sand the surfaces and apply two coats of premium water-based lacquer primer. Between coats, we perform fine sanding and address any necessary bondo and glazing repairs to achieve a seamless base.

Inspection & Top Coat Application

After rigorous inspections confirm that every detail meets our high standards, we apply two coats of high-quality water-based lacquer top coat, with additional touch-ups as needed to deliver a flawless, upscale finish.

Before the project begins, please ensure that all items are removed from both the cabinets and the surrounding kitchen area. This clear space is essential to provide our team with the necessary workspace for our tools and equipment, helping us work efficiently and safely.

Yes, customization options are available to tailor the look of your cabinetry to match your home’s aesthetic. However, our options are subject to the performance characteristics that ensure the durability of our coatings. While various finishes—including lower sheen options—are available on the market, not all meet the durability standards we require for long-lasting results. For example, a low-sheen finish tends to compromise durability. If you request a low-sheen product, it must be applied using a solvent-based finish, which may not be compatible with what is currently applied to your cabinets. Alternatively, to achieve a low-sheen look without sacrificing durability, you may need to consider exploring new cabinetry options.

We are able to assist with new cabinetry requests as well.

Will I need to be present during the project?
You only need to be present during the initial consultation and sample approval phases. Once we have full access and the necessary approvals, our team will handle the on-site work independently. Rest assured, you will come back to a clean home at the end of each day—aside from the required hoarding for safety and work integrity.

How do you handle unexpected issues or delays?
We strive to complete projects within five business days, but unforeseen challenges—whether due to cabinet fabrication issues or product discrepancies—can occasionally arise. When that happens, we will promptly communicate the situation and the reasons for any additional time needed. We kindly ask that you allow some flexibility in scheduling to accommodate potential adjustments, ensuring that every detail meets our high standards.
